Florida Man Dies In Drug Raid
An unarmed man was shot dead by a Volusia deputy officer last week. Officer Raible, 36, entered the home of Derek Cruice, 26, last Wednesday and upon entering the home, Raible perceived Cruice's actions to be threatening, leading him to fire his weapon.
Sheriff Ben Johnson said Derek Cruice was shot in the face around 6:30 a.m. by Raible as a sheriff’s drug task force came through the front door of 831 Maybrook Drive in Deltona. Cruice was pronounced dead at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City. Due to the involvement of a law enforcement officer, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is in leading the investigation. Raible, member of the Sheriff’s Office’s SWAT Team, has been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure for deputy-involved shootings.
About 9 pounds of marijuana was found by investigators at the home as well as a scale, a drug ledger, marijuana smoking pipes, plastic bags and about $3,000 in cash. Cruice is the 10th person to die in a US drug law enforcement operation this year.
