Harborside Off The Hook
For years, the Feds have been threatening to seize the property leased by Harboside Health Center in Oakland, California. On Tuesday, it was finally released that federal prosecutors are dropping their efforts and will leave Harborside alone.
The Feds have been cracking down on California medical marijuana businesses since 2011 however, dismissing this action is working towards ending cannabis prohibition. "When US Attorney Melinda Haag first filed suit to seize the property Harborside is located in, I vowed we would never abandon our patients who— and predicted Harborside would outlast the efforts to close us down. Today, thanks to the deep support of our community and our elected officials, and the skill and determination of our legal counsel, that prediction has come true," said Harborside founder, Steve Deangelo.
Hundreds of businesses have been threatened by Haag and three other prosecutors in California. Oakland has led the country in permitting, taxing and regulating medical cannabis dispensaries. According to Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, other cities, states and nations followed its lead, enduring federal intimidation for much longer than the have.
The federal dismissal comes just weeks after the U.S. dropped its case against Lynnette Shaw, one of the first medical marijuana shop operators in California.
