Illinois Dispensaries Make First Sales

Yesterday, the Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program launched, allowing dispensaries to make their first sales to registered patients. The state authorizes the operation of sixty medical marijuana dispensaries however, only nine are allowed to operate currently. As of now, all are located either downstate or in the “collar counties” surrounding Chicago.

Joseph Wright, the Director of the Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program, expects a dozen dispensaries to open before December. The program has been slow to develop yet, it is the closest resemblance to what commercial cannabis markets will likely look like in the future.  Dispensaries that have yet to have opened in the state may benefit from watching how the market develops.

There are currently about 3,300 registered medical marijuana patients in Illinois. People of the state have an eye out for a spike in MMJ patients after the launch of the Medical Cannabis Pilot Program.
