Ireland To Legalize Cannabis & Heroin
On Monday, Ireland’s Minister in charge of the National Drugs Strategy made a shocking statement, saying the country plans to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of cannabis, cocaine and heroin. An Irish Times reporter says the major drug policy overhaul will also open supervised injecting rooms for heroin users.
Supervised injecting rooms will open in Dublin next year and soon after in Cork, Galway and Limerick. Minister Aodhán Ó Ríordáin said this will be a “radical culture shift” in the approach to tackling drug addiction.
Supervised injection rooms will limit the risks of heroin users contracting HIV and Hepatitis C from contaminated needles according to Ó Ríordáin. “I am firmly of the view that there needs to be a cultural shift in how we regard substance misuse if we are to break this cycle and make a serious attempt to tackle drug and alcohol addiction,” he said.
