Man Attempts To Smuggle 7 Tons Of Pot

A 47 year old Mexican citizen was supposed to be delivering furniture from his country into California.  However, he attempted to smuggle more than seven tons of cannabis through the San Diego border.  Customs seized the pot after an investigation.

At the Otay Mesa port of entry last week, an officer instructed the man to pull aside for an in-depth examination.  Inspectors ran through the imaging system where they discovered abnormalities in the shipment.  It was then that officers opened the trailer to find stacks of boxes which contained large wrapped packages that tested positive for marijuana.

Officers seized 587 packages, weighing in at a total of 14,219 pounds.  The massive amount of marijuana had a street value of $7.1 million.

The driver and the truck has been turned over to Homeland Security for further investigation.
