Mouth Swabs For DUI Testing In San Diego

With marijuana being legal both medically and recreationally in the state of California, law enforcement has a growing concern about keeping their roads free of impaired drivers. San Diego is now apart of a number of cities that use a mouth swab and portable testing machine to determine whether or not a driver is under the influence.

Huffington Post reports that the machines and mouth swabs have been in use since last Friday. Not only do the machines test for THC, it also tests for cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamine, methadone, opiates and benzodiazepines.

The swabs could be held in a persons mouth for up to four minutes, while the machine can read the swabs for up to eight minutes.

Drivers can refuse to take the test however, the officer may request a blood test.
