NY MMJ Sales To Start This Month
Four dispensaries are scheduled to open in New York City this month, beginning the state's medical marijuana program. While the health department has already launched its program to register MMJ patients, a list of registered doctors allowed to write MMJ prescriptions has yet to have been released.
DNAinfo New York state's that physicians are required to register with the Department of Health as well as complete a four hour course. The training course launched in October 2015 and according to Stephen B. Corn, academic clinician at Harvard Medical School, ”I can tell you registration [for the course] is brisk.”
The medical marijuana program in New York is the strictest in the country. Qualifying medical conditions include cancer, HIV/AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathy and Huntington’s disease. Deputy state director for the Drug Policy Alliance, Julie Netherland, told the Poughkeepsie Journal, "It’s a real problem. We get calls from patients every day wanting to know how they can get a physician to help them, and in the absence of any kind of public list, there’s nothing we can do to assist."
