Obama Wants Weed Treated Like Alcohol & Cigarettes
Although we have elected Donald Trump to be our next POTUS, Barack Obama's job is not done in the White House. He continues to commence sentences of non-violent criminals and just recently told Rolling Stone that he fe feels marijuana should be considered a public health issue as compared to a criminal offense.
"Look, I've been very clear about my belief that we should try to discourage substance abuse," Obama told Rolling Stone. He explains that according to him, he does not feel that legalization will be the remedy to the failed War on Drugs, "But I do believe that treating this as a public-health issue, the same way we do with cigarettes or alcohol, is the much smarter way to deal with it."
If only Obama was to not only say, but act on his beliefs during his time in office then maybe, just maybe, we would have a chance at living in a country that doesn't jail people for possession. "As you might imagine, the DEA, whose job it is historically to enforce drug laws, is not always going to be on the cutting edge about these issues," he reminded. Ultimately though, Obama feels, "it is untenable over the long term for the Justice Department or the DEA to be enforcing a patchwork of laws, where something that's legal in one state could get you a 20-year prison sentence in another. So this is a debate that is now ripe, much in the same way that we ended up making progress on same-sex marriage."
In Obama's eyes, marijuana should have a warning label on it similar to alcohol and tobacco products. Herbalists should not be punished as criminals for using or possessing the drug that is becoming legal in majority of the states in the country.
