PHILA Officially Decriminalizes!
The city of Philadelphia laws for lightening punishments for marijuana possession went into effect yesterday, October 20th. Philadelphia Police Lt. John Sanford stated, "Those that are using marijuana...will be issued a notice of violation in the amount of $100."
Mayor Michael Nutter approved the legislation just weeks ago and now, those found with 30 grams, or one ounce, of marijuana will be issued a $25 ticket by authorities. The bill was sponsored by Councilman Jim Kenney and although it does not legalize marijuana, Kenney said, "Under this policy, police officers will be able to remain focused on more serious offenses and many young people will be spared the life-altering consequences of a criminal record, such as limited job prospects, inability to obtain student loans or even join the armed services."
