Roger Goodell Believes Marijuana Is "Addictive"

It has been quite some time that marijuana has been a huge topic of conversation in the NFL. The debate has been whether or not cannabis should be allowed as a medical treatment for football players.  The scale is constantly tipping - some believe it should while many believe it should not - keeping marijuana listed as a prohibited drug of use amongst football players. NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, recently spoke of his reasons for his opinion of cannabis use.

Goodell visited Mike & Mike reaffirming that he believes marijuana is bad for players.  "Listen," he says, "you’re ingesting smoke, so that’s not usually a very positive thing that people would say. It does have addictive nature. There are a lot of compounds in marijuana that may not be healthy for the players long-term..."  From a very broad, uneducated point of view, some may agree with Goodell.  Ingesting smoke is not ideal for health and could definitely affect a players breathing and running.  However, we agree with him more when he says, "I think you still have to look at a lot of aspects of marijuana use."

Commissioner Goodell also does consider the medical benefits of cannabis.  While his stance on recreational use seems to be at a standstill, affirmative "NO," he does feel as if physicians may be on to something with the medical benefits. “We look at it from a medical standpoint, so if people feel that it has a medical benefit, the medical advisers have to tell you that," he continued.

"To date, they haven’t said this is a change we think you should make that’s in the best interests of the health and safety of our players. If they do, we’re certainly going to consider that. But to date, they haven’t really said that.”
