Will Texas Legalize Recreational?
Texas is looking like it just might be the next state to legalize recreational cannabis. On Wednesday, the Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee approved legislation that would make it legal to buy and sell marijuana in the state. House Bill 2165 gained two more Republicans on the panel already consisting of three Democrats, giving it a 5-2 victory.
Although the proposal is expected to have no chance at passing any other obstacles that may come in its way, this victory is still a major step towards possible legalization. Phillip Martin of the liberal group Progress Texas tweeted, "Marijuana policy reform continues to make unprecedented progress this session."
The bill has gained support from Republicans David Simpson of Longview and Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi. Committee chairman Abel Herrero said he had some reservations with the bill but would support it.
Next week, the bill will go to the committee that controls the state House floor calendar.
